ADULT PADDLEFISH

"There is still so much to learn about our nation's rivers; about the ancient survivors who inhabited these waters long before dinosaurs roamed the earth.... prehistoric relics cloaked in the secrets of an enigmatic past. We marvel at the sheer thought of their existence, and wonder at the possibility there may be more."

ALEX CORD

Well known for his role on the TV series, "Air Wolf", Alex Cord is a talented actor of stage and screen. He was nominated for the Best Actor Award by the London Critics, and has starred in 25 feature films, and over 300 television shows.

Alex Cord hosts this informative one hour documentary about paddlefish; a primitive, bizarre looking creature with an ancestry that dates back to the days of the dinosaur.  Indigenous to the United States, the paddlefish is the only living species of its kind.  They were a popular target for poachers during the Iranian crisis in the 1980s because their eggs could be processed into caviar that was similar in taste and texture to the prized sturgeon caviar from the Caspian Sea. As a result, their populations in certain states were decimated by illegal poaching. This video highlights the undercover sting operation by special agents with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, and Missouri Department of Conservation.

The video also features the biology and ecology of this amazing animal, and includes rare underwater footage of paddlefish in the wild.  Other highlights include interviews with the experts, a c-section surgery, hatchery rearing, population and habitat assessments, snagging, and much more.

"THE BUST"

Special Agents with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, and local law enforcement officials in Missouri arrested poachers on the spot after an extensive undercover sting operation. Offenders were convicted, fined and sentenced to time in a federal penetary.

"PADDLEFISH SNAGGING"

Paddlefish snagging is a popular sport in areas where populations are healthy and self-sustaining, such as Montana and the Dakotas. Missouri must stock them to support the fishery.

"LARVAL PADDLEFISH"

Larval paddlefish live off their yolk sack for the first few days of life, and must find food quickly to survive. They are dependent on the river current to carry them into the nutrient rich backwater areas which are essential to their early development.
